VJ Books Offering Autographed copies of IMPACT by Bestselling Author Douglas Preston

Douglas Preston, best known for his collaborations with Lincoln Child, has penned his 10th solo novel, IMPACT.  Preston has been called “the new and improved Michael Crichton” by International bestseller Tess Gerrritsen.  In IMPACT, Preston brings his popular character Wyman Ford, last seen in 2008’s Blasphemy, back for another round of adventure. The fast-paced tale weaves together three separate plot points, uniting them in one explosive conclusion.  Lee Child, author of the bestselling Jack Reacher novels, calls IMPACTfull of huge ideas, but intensely human, too, and intensely suspenseful.”

Wyman Ford is tapped for a secret expedition to Cambodia to locate the source of strangely beautiful gemstones that do not appear to be of this world.  While he searches for the origin of these dangerous jewels, a young woman in Maine borrows her father’s boat to search the outer islands for the meteorite that lit up the sky in her small town. Meanwhile, a scientist at the National Propulsion Facility discovers an inexplicable source of gamma rays in the outer Solar System. The scientist is found decapitated, the data missing. Ford soon realizes the jewel mine he seeks is much more than it seem and is strangely connected to the events happening on the other side of the world.

“Both Doug and Lincoln had been good friends to VJ Books over the years,” said VJ Books co-founder, John Hutchinson, “and we are always excited when one of them writes a new novel.” IMPACT will be no exception, with autographed copies shipping in late January/early February. VJ Books’ long-standing relationship with Mr. Preston has resulted in an ample backlist inventory of many of his independently written novels, as well as those co-penned with Lincoln Child, which are available at www.vjbooks.com.

DOUGLAS PRESTON is the co-author, with Lincoln Child, of the famed Pendergast series of novels, including such bestselling titles as The Book of the Dead and The Wheel of Darkness, as well as The Relic. His solo novels include Jennie, and the New York Times bestsellers Tyrannosaur Canyon and Blasphemy.

Preston is a Research Associate at the Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe, a member of PEN New Mexico, and a board member of the School of American Research in Santa Fe. He counts in his ancestry the poet Emily Dickinson, the newspaperman Horace Greeley, and the infamous murderer and opium addict Amasa Greenough. In Cemetary Dance by Preston/Child Murder Leads to Mystery Leads to Unnatural Magic

A review by Nikki from Texas!

All I can say is OMG. In the newest of the Pendergast series books, there is no shortage of personality in the eccentric character we’ve come to adore. Murder leads to mystery leads to unnatural magic. As sad as it was to lose one of the characters we have so long-enjoyed, this book is one of the top contenders, if not THE top contender in the series. I wish I could have read it at a slower pace…but I simply couldn’t stop! If you are new to the series, this book can be read as a stand-alone, IMO. Even so, many people go back and read the others as to embellish the characters in their minds a bit more.  Either way, THIS book “c’est magie”.  Preston & Child have done it again. Dance of Death – Series Within a Series for the Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child Fans

Another Review by Nikki C. in Texas!

Dance of Death is a series  within the Pendergast series. It’s book 2 of the Diogenes Trilogy, preceded by Brimstone. Agent Pendergast faces what seems to be his ONLY nemesis, his own brother. While Brimstone makes some light of Diogenes Pendergast, Dance of Death is the start of the real action.Agent Pendergast seems to have the upper hand in every case, until a brother thought dead appears and carries out a series of grotesque murders only capable by. These murders set the stage for the most well-planned revenge against Agent Pendergast. Each step is methodical and painstakingly timed to lead Agent Pendergast down the slaughter chute. Many of the characters from the Pendergast series are re-united in this thrilling novel of revenge. We also get the treat of exploring more of the fascinating and eccentric Pendergast family tree. I must forewarn you that to learn the grand finale behind the plans of Diogenes, you MUST read the last book in the Trilogy  Book of the Dead.

Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child – Cemetary Dance

(Publisher’s Weekly, Mar. 2)

Bestsellers Preston and Child kill off a regular supporting character at the outset of this suspenseful tale of urban terror, their ninth to feature FBI special agent Aloysius Pendergast (after The Wheel of Darkness). William Smithback, a New York Times reporter, and his wife, Nora Kelly, an anthropologist with the New York Museum of Natural History, are celebrating their first anniversary when Smithback is fatally stabbed in their Manhattan apartment, apparently by a creepy neighbor, Colin Fearing, an out-of-work British actor. Given eyewitness descriptions of the killer, including one from Kelly herself, as well as surveillance footage showing a blood-stained Fearing emerging from the apartment building right after the crime, the case appears to be open and shut—until Pendergast and his NYPD ally, Lt. Vincent D’Agosta, learn that Fearing died almost two weeks earlier. This taut page-turner can only add to the authors’ growing fan base. 8-city author tour. (May)

Terminal Freeze by Lincoln Child

(thrillerwriters.org, Jeff Ayers)

Far north in the Arctic Circle, a team of scientists uncovers the frozen remains of a large animal.  Soon after their discovery, a documentary film crew arrives to record their find for a large audience.  Then the movie director decides that they will thaw the animal out on live television.  While the “ancient animal buried in the ice” has been done before, chronicling the find from a documentary perspective felt original and brought back memories of Geraldo.

Lincoln Child has the ability to manipulate the reader in surprising ways.  In his previous novel, Deep Storm, he lead the reader to believe the characters were heading to Atlantis (spoiler alert: they weren’t).  Child commented, “I think it must spring from the novelist’s always-on desire to surprise and confuse. If you can do something completely out of left field, completely unexpected, you’ll keep the reader on edge, going forward.”

How does Child write such an organized read?  He responded, “I generally write the first third basically off the top of my head. I’ll have thought that far (more…)
